This exhibition features work from four emerging artists, including Chad Person, Feodor Voronov, Kenichi Yokono, and Yoram Wolberger. We are really looking forward to Go West in July 2012, the second half of this bi-coastal “gallery swap” at Mark Moore Gallery, with work on display by Joshua Liner Gallery artists David Ellis and Link text. Special thanks to Christos Katsiaouni for these great photos of the reception. Please enjoy!

Currently at American University in Washington D.C., the Katzen Arts Center celebrated the debut of Tomokazu Matsuyama’s first solo museum exhibit, entitled Thousand Regards. This exhibit is in conjunction with the Japanese embassy, to coincide with the 100 year anniversary of the gift of cherry blossom trees from Japan to the US. Serving as a mini-retrospective, the artist’s contemporary works will be exhibited alongside Floating World: Japanese Woodblock Prints from the Sakai Collection of the UKIYOE Museum of Matsumoto city, Nagano Prefecture.

Pictured above, Tomokazu Matsuyama leading an artist talk before the opening reception at the museum, last Thursday, April 5th, 2012.

The exhibition’s opening reception was well attended by many admirers of his work, as well as friends and family that traveled to Washington D.C. to support the artist. Congratulations to the artist and thank you to the Katzen Arts Center for putting together this wonderful exhibition.

Thanks to Lori Zimmer and ArtSlant for this great review of Kris Kuksi’s latest solo exhibit:

“Ranging from concisely small to overwhelmingly larger-than-life, each piece in Triumph could occupy the viewer for virually hours. From top to tip, a mass of intricate figures, animals, architectural elements and fantastical creatures conjure narrative atop narrative tha could keep the mind busy endlessly.”

Snow Globes by Tomokazu Matsuyama from The Standard Hotel on Vimeo.
Tomokazu Matsuyama and The Standard Shop have come together to create this limited edition snow globe based on the artist’s work:

“Tomokazu Matsuyama’s work is both wild and controlled, figurative, yet abstract, steeped in Japanese iconography – both ancient and contemporary – but also specifically American, cowboys and indians, bucking broncos, and Jackson Pollock. We saw this and thought … let’s make snow globes together. And thus it was born, a unique edition of 30, 8” tall glass and wood snow globes, handmade with acrylics submerged in water, the uniquely Western souvenir as seen through the Japanese born, California bred, New York based, former snowboard professional turned painter and sculptor, Matsuyama.”

This excerpt, as well as a full interview with Matsuyama, is available on The Standard’s website.

Please enjoy these photos from the release party at The Standard Shop, as well as some shots from the reception at Le Bain. Photos courtesy Arrested Motion.

‘Resolve’ Recap

Jacob A. Pfeiffer - ‘Nesting’, 2012, Oil on panel, 8 x 8 inches

Artist-curator Tony Curanaj has gathered an exciting group of contemporary realist artists for the exhibition Resolve. The gallery has received an impressive amount of visitors since the opening and continues to do so on a daily basis. We are very appreciative for the attention this show has garnered and would like to share some of the wonderful things people have been saying. Many thanks and congratulations to everyone involved—we appreciate the opportunity to exhibit such a talented group of artists.

The Epoch Times - “Chelsea Art Exhibit Brings Realism to Mainstream” (PDF) by Katy Mantyk: “Garnering a lot of attention and museum-like foot traffic, an atypical art exhibit in Chelsea celebrates a side of contemporary art that is out of the limelight but is quietly but surely gaining strength.”

Fine Art Connoisseur - “Something Fresh in Chelsea” (PDF): “Joshua Liner Gallery is presenting Resolve, an exhibition of 25 emerging and established artists whose work is rooted in classical art traditions and training.”

The Second Hanging - Resolve Exhibition Curated by Tony Curanaj (PDF): “Unique in recent shows, there are no weak pieces.”

Cool Hunting - An Artist-curated Group Show Redefines Contemporary Realism (PDF)) by Karen Day: “There’s a misconception that Realism isn’t conceptual,” (Curanaj) says. “I think Realism is of the highest, utmost conceptual ideas because you’re continuously conceptualizing what’s in front of you and putting it down as notes and feelings, trying to depict what is life, what is reality.”
